Obituary for Socorro M. Flores

Socorro Marinez Flores passed away at her home on June 5, 2021. Born in San Pedro, CA on October 27, 1930 to Jesus and Rosario (Chalita) Marinez, she was the youngest of seven children (Elvira, Robert, Armando, Eva, Ana Lydia, and Enrique). Socorro was raised in San Pedro, CA and in Baja California, her family having moved to Tijuana, BC shortly before WWII.
Socorro met Frank Flores in 1950, when they both worked at a produce packing company in Otay, CA. She and Frank were married on February 27, 1951. They lived in San Diego, CA until moving to National City, CA in 1963. Frank passed away in 2015. They had four children (Carmen, Javier, Dolores, and Rebecca), nine grandchildren (Eddie, Andy, Ruben, Sarah, Rosario, Rachel, Laura, Amanda, and Danielle), and five great grandchildren
(Adriana, Travis, Ruben, Audrey, and Arabella).
While Socorro and Frank lived in San Diego, CA, their siblings and other family members lived in the Los Angeles area. Family was very important to Socorro; the family would go to Los Angeles several times a year to visit their grandmothers, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Socorro’s mother would come to San Diego to visit frequently and in 1966 Socorro’s mother and stepfather retired in National City.
In addition to visiting family in Los Angeles, Socorro loved having her nieces and nephews visit her home during summer vacation. She enjoyed cooking for her extended family, especially making home-made flour tortillas and chorizo. Socorro was always willing to open her home to family members who needed a place to stay for whatever the reason. Throughout the years she shared her home with in-laws, grandchildren, and family friends.
Socorro and Frank were able to travel more extensively during retirement. They visited Mexico (Mexico City, Guadalajara, Veracruz, and Mascota) and took tours of Spain and Italy. They also traveled to Chicago, Walt Disney World, New York City, Washington DC, New Orleans, and her favorite place – Las Vegas. She saw the San Diego Padres play in Chicago and Los Angeles, and saw the San Diego Chargers play in New Orleans and Foxboro.
Whether cooking, crocheting, working on jigsaw puzzles, going to bingo and local casinos, Socorro was always busy.
Socorro was a generous, caring person, a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and friend. We will all cherish her amazing love for her family. She will be in our hearts forever.
